We were happy to finally hit solid ground when we docked in Funchal. Unfortunately we missed one of our days in Funchal so we weren't able to explore the city and see the botanical gardens and take the famous toboggan ride. We also didn't get to Blandy's nor did we have any Madeira wine. We must come back! We had arranged a tour with Madeira Happy Tours to see the west side of the Island. First stop - Canara de Lobos, a fishing village. It became famous when Wiston Churchill did paintings from here in 1940.
The island is fascinating and there are farm plots on top of each other going up the island. Pretty much every fruit grows in Madeira. Lots of bananas, sugar cane, grapes, oranges and lots of flowers. The roads are narrow and twisty.
We visited the highest cliff in Europe at 580 m - Miradouro do Cabo Girao for a look down on the glass platform. Beautiful and somewhat terrifying.
Our lunch break was at an interesting restaurant in Porto Moniz. We had soup, black fish (which is white), veggies, dessert and drinks for 12 euro. After lunch we were mesmerized by the crashing water. We tried some potent poncha - a rum, honey, guava and orange juice drink at Bride's falls.
